Morning meeting CANCELLED tomorrow

The morning meeting for tomorrow is cancelled... as you are all on a two-hour delay and Anna and I are busy with Finals Week here at IUPUC.

So, THERE WILL BE PRACTICE on Wednesday afternoon, especially for those who are working on new pieces or events... and for anyone else willing to work.

Friday practice is cancelled.

There will be no practice next week, unless you want to work with each other after school or in other venues.

If we don't see you Wednesday afternoon, have a blessed and wonderful holiday with your family and a relaxing vacation as well.

If you have any questions, contact Anna or Matt via whatever channel makes sense to you.

IUPUC/Ivy Tech Speech Meet CANCELLED

Hello all,

Matt and I had to make the very difficult decision to cancel the speech meet this weekend. Several school districts in the state are denying travel requests and bus travel this weekend. After practice today, we had already lost 1/3 of our entries. In order to keep the meet competitive and a good size meet, we have decided that it is in our best interest to postpone the meet. Tentatively, we would like to reschedule for January 25th -- but we need to get final approval from IUPUC, Ivy Tech, and IHSFA first.

So what does this mean, we will not be setting the meet up on Friday afternoon at IUPUC and will not be practicing because we will not be competing again until January. We will, however, practice next week.

We are planning to still have the Christmas Party at the Miller's house, provided BCSC does not cancel school on Friday. If there is a delay, we will still have the party -- but if school is cancelled, there will not be a party. This is an effort to keep everyone safe!

Thank you for being the flexible team that you are! Please text your teammates who may not  check the blog regularly, so that they know this information.

If you have any questions, please let Anna or Matt know.

Important and busy week in CEHS Speech world!

Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving and were able to enjoy your break! An exciting end to break with an East win at State!

This week is going to be a very busy one for our speech team. Tuesday morning's meeting is very important - this will be the only time we will be getting registration information for this weekend's meet at IUPUC. We will be offering improv duo, so think about whether or not you are interested in tripling in that.

We will only be having practice on Wednesday this week.

On Friday, we will meet at IUPUC at Anna's office (CC151) after school to set up for the tournament. You should plan to bring your food with you on Friday. If you forget what you are assigned to bring, please track Chris down this week - he has the list.

On Friday evening around 5:30, we will be convening at Katie Miller's house for the Speech Team Monthly dinner and Holiday party. If you are a freshman or sophomore, please plan to bring a side (chips/veggies) and if you are a junior or senior, please plan to bring dessert. The Miller family has graciously offered to donate the dinner, so no need to bring any cash. We will also be having a team WHITE ELEPHANT gift exchange, if you would like to participate, plan to bring a $10 gift for your biological sex -- meaning if you are a girl, please bring a $10 gift for a girl and if you are a boy bring a $10 gift for a boy. We will take this time to hang out, enjoy each other's company and celebrate a very successful first half of the season!

If you have any questions or will not be at Tuesday's meeting, please text Anna and/or Matt as soon as possible.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Just a reminder that there are no meetings or practices this week, so that you can relax and spend time with your families over Thanksgiving break.

We will meet on Tuesday, December 3rd to get the registration for the IUPUC meet. You should also plan to bring your $10 for t-shirts if you ordered them. They are in and ready to be delivered.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your families!

Results from Noblesville High School Speech Meet

Columbus East Speech displayed an incredible amount of heart and resiliency at yesterday's speech tournament....we started our morning facing several challenges. "I won't be on the bus.....I just wrapped my car around a telephone pole" are no words a speech coach or anyone wants to hear -- but fortunately, everyone was safe and made it to the meet to compete.

We had an incredible showing with the following results:
1st Memorized Duo - Mariann and Tessa
1st Discussion - Whitney
2nd Discussion - Molly
8th Discussion - Alex
5th Impromptu - Chris
8th Impromptu - Patrick
7th Declamation - Katie
6th OO - Chris
9th OP - Ashleigh
9th Radio - Molly
6th IX - Gracie
7th IX - Naveen
6th HI - Mariann

The team was 3rd overall out of 20 some-odd teams at the tournament -- finishing one point lowering than the second place team, Cathedral! If this is what happens on a high stress day, we cannot wait to see what happens when things go smoothly from start to finish. Pictures to follow soon!

On to the Ball State Red Carpet Affair this weekend!

Team dinner on Friday....

If you are planning on coming to the team dinner on Friday, could you please send me a text, email, or Facebook message to let me know. I need to know how much pizza to order.....so everyone is well fed.

Also, remember:

Freshmen and sophomores: Soda and paper goods

Juniors and seniors: Desserts and chips/pretzels!

First Meet of the Season: Fishers this Saturday!

Good morning all!

We are bringing a total of 26 entries (3 more than any tournament we registered for last year) and 6 judges (5 are parents and 1 is an IUPUC student). It is bound to be a great time! Here is some information and some reminders about our meet this weekend:

  • Please be in the band parking lot at CEHS at 5:40am on Saturday. The bus will depart promptly at 5:45am and if you are not on the bus, you will have to find your own transportation to Fishers High School.
  • If your parent(s) are judging this weekend, they are welcome to ride the bus with you or you are welcome to ride with them. If you ride with them, you need to be at Fishers High School no later than 7:30am.
  • This is going to be a very long day. There are 35 schools competing with somewhere in the neighborhood of 580 entries.....for those of you who competed last year, this is a Ben Davis size tournament and it is bigger than the state tournament.
    • Matt and I would estimate we should be back to East by 6:30pm, but there are no guarantees. We will stay all the way through awards.
    • If you have plans for the evening, you can have a parent pick you up at Fishers when you are done competing -- but you need to provide us with a note when you get on the bus in the morning.
  • Things to bring to the speech meet:
    • Professional attire to compete in (If you are concerned about your attire, please send Matt and I a picture before Friday evening)
    • Comfy clothes to change into for the bus ride back to CEHS
    • A blanket and pillow for the bus
    • Your speech binder if you are competing in an interp event
    • Your electronic device if you are competing in extemp
    • Any research you might have on hand if you are competing in discussion
    • Some snacks to get you through the day and maybe some to share with your teammates
    • Some cash to buy lunch from the concession stand (Remember if we want people to buy from the concession stand at our meet, we need to buy from theirs)
    • Bottled water
    • Any games or decks of cards to play during down time (and there may be a lot)
    • An open mind and a will to do well
      • This is the first meet of the year and it is going to be a blast, even if it is a really long day!
As always if you have any questions, please contact me (860.836.0081) or Matt (812.343.7533). We are really excited (and a little nervous) to get this season kicked off and to send time with you competing!

First Speech Team Dinner

Based on the surveys and discussions we have had with you this week, it is very apparently you would like more team building activities outside of early morning meetings, practices, and weekend meets. So we are going to have monthly team dinners, these dinners will be hosted at a variety of different locations on a Friday evening before a meet.

The first team dinner will be this coming Friday, November 1st. It will be hosted at Anna's house (6055 Conestoga Trail in Columbus). You should plan to arrive by 6pm and be picked up no later than 8:30pm (so you can get a good night's sleep before our first meet).

What is needed from you for this dinner?

  • Please bring $3 to put towards the cost of pizza.
  • If you are a freshman or a sophomore, you should plan to bring paper goods and/or liters of soda.
  • If you are a junior or a senior, you should plan to bring chips/pretzels and/or dessert.
  • Please let Anna know by Wednesday at 5pm - so she knows how much pizza to order.
This will be an informal way for the team to get together to psych ourselves up for our first meet! Even if you are not competing on Saturday, but are free on Friday evening, we would love to have you.

If you are interested in hosting a team dinner before Thanksgiving, please let Anna or Matt know and they will help you with the planning!

Looking forward to another fun week of speech preparation!

Just a reminder that there is a meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) morning in C104 at 7:15am. Update for the week of October 15, 2013

Hello all!

Hope you are enjoying your fall break and taking the time to work on your pieces/speeches.....we are three weeks away from our first meet in Fishers!

This week will be holding one practice on Wednesday, October 16th from 3:15-5pm in CC 245 at IUPUC. This is the same room we were in last week.We will work on both Interp and PA events at this practice. Remember, we will also be running a practice discussion round for the discussers, focused on the topic of GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN.

Remember tomorrow (10/16) is the deadline for piece selection -- meaning you need to have your pieces selected and rough cut, so both Matt and I can review them before you have to memorize them or start practicing their delivery. Before we got to our first meet, we will need electronic copies of each of your pieces, so that we will have them available on the off chance (which is super rare) that they are ever challenged at a meet.

Our judges training has been rescheduled for Thursday, October 24th from 7-8:30pm in the CEHS cafeteria. Anyone you are planning on having judge this season should plan to attend this meeting. Remember to be a judge, you only need to be above of the age of 18, have a high school diploma, and be breathing!

We need to submit our registration for the Fishers Meet (11/2) the morning of Monday, October 28th -- therefore, Matt and I need to hear from those of you who are planning on competing and what events you are planning on competing in. If you are planning on competing in IMPROV DUO, you can triple at this meet. So those of you who are considering this temporary event are also welcome to compete in your two regular events if you would like -- but please let us know. We will need a final registration tally by Friday, October 25th at practice.

Lastly, we are in need of one more judge to join us for the meet at Noblesville High School on November 9th. If you know someone who would be able to help us, please let Anna as soon as possible.

See you tomorrow!

Update for the Week of 10/7

Hello all! Hope you are enjoying the first day of fall break, while Matt and I are toiling away at IUPUC.

I wanted to let you know that both practices over Fall Break on the Wednesdays will be inn CC245, which is on the second floor of the main IUPUC building. We will be meeting from 3-5pm on both Wednesdays.

Also of note, you  need to have your pieces selected and approved by the coaches no later than Wednesday, October 16th. We have completed all of our piece orders for the semester, so if you need a piece, you will need to check it out of a local library.

Thanks to some wonderful parents we are set with judges for the Fishers meet on November 2nd. We are in need of one more judge for the Noblesville meet on November 9th. Remember that you are required to supply two judges if you are single entered over the course of the season and you need to supply four judges if you are double entered over the course of the season. If you have any questions, please let Anna know as she is keeping the judges schedule.

See you all on Wednesday at IUPUC!

Update about Judges

Hello all,

Here is the link to the judge sign up sheet that I have compiled so far.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ao0Lvl3jFe0QdE9EUXFTM0dBUGlXX3lyX1FKdmxjYnc&usp=sharing

You will notice that some meets have no judges and some meets have many judges. We need to take between 6 and 7 judges to every meet. We will need to bring somewhere in the neighborhood of 15-20 judges to Sectionals. Please try to get your judges to sign up as soon as possible, so that we can ensure that we can take the whole team to every meet on our schedule.

See all the interpers for practice tomorrow!

Even newer Judges Training

Ok, so there is a Parents Meeting sponsored by the Guidance office on the 22nd. So, the even newer judges' training will be on Thursday, October 24th at 7pm in the East Cafeteria. This is the Tuesday you return from Fall Break.

See you all at practice this week!

Judges Training for tonight CANCELLED!

Because we were not able to meet this morning to plan our judges' training, we are going to cancel it for tonight. The new judges' training will be on Tuesday, October 22nd at 7pm in the East Cafeteria. This is the Tuesday you return from Fall Break.

See you all at practice this week!

Two hour delay

Because of the two hour delay, we will not be having our morning meeting this morning. Please remind your judges/parents/support people that we will be having a judges' training session tonight from 7-8pm. We will meet in the East cafeteria.

We will have practice on Wednesday for the PA events (Discussion, DEC, OO, impromptu, radio, USX, and IX). All of the other events will practice on Friday this week. Please make sure this information is communicated to every member of our team.

Announcements for the Week of 9/23-9/27

This is a busy week in the world of CEHS Speech, so I just wanted to send out a couple reminders. First, there is our weekly meeting tomorrow morning at 7:15 in C104. We have some important announcements and information to share with you.

Second, TOMORROW (9/24) is also our mandatory parent/support person meeting at 7pm in CEHS cafeteria. You should plan to attend with an adult and please bring your dues check with you.

Third, Wednesday (9/25) this week, we will continue with event selection and cutting pieces. You should bring your pieces to practice to work on.....Matt and I will be available to help with the cutting process.

Fourth, Friday, there is NO PRACTICE. However, if you signed up to help with the Girl Scouts, they will be arriving by 3:30pm. Please bring pieces to work on with them. The idea is that they demonstrate improvement from two weeks ago to this week. You will have an hour to work on delivery with them before they will deliver them before the whole group.

The season has started in full force! Welcome back or welcome to one of the most fun activities at school!

Great call-out meeting this morning! It was so exciting to see so many new faces and to have most of the veterans back in one room.....we are going to have a great season.

Reminder: Tomorrow (Wednesday 9/18) is our event fair from 3:20-5pm. We will spend time talking about each event and helping you decide what you might like to compete in. On Friday this week, we will be at East from 3:20-5pm to start working on piece selection and filing for the limited prep events.

Look forward to seeing everyone this week!

Room change for Callouts (and probably all morning meetings

All:  The morning callout location has changed to C104.  This will also hopefully be our new morning home for speech team meetings throughout the 13-14 competition year.  Please make sure that all of your veterans and possible new teammates know this.  Also make sure that someone is posted up by the Orange Room to direct interested persons back down to C104.  Thanks so much!  See you tomorrow!

MANDATORY Callout Meetings

Hello all!

Matt and I are currently at a conference for all the speech coaches in Indiana and have learned lots of information about changes for the upcoming year that must be communicated to you before we have a call-out meeting for new competitors. We also have new expectations for our team that must be shared as well. Therefore, you MUST attend ONE of two call-out meetings next week.

They will be Wednesday from 3-5pm and a second one on Friday from 4-6pm (after a group of you help the Girl Scouts).

We understand that many of you have soccer practice, Xc practice, golf practice, and rehearsals for other things....however, it is important that we get on the same page. If you would like us to communicate directly with your coaches we would be glad. to.

Please text or call us if you have any questions, otherwise we will see you Wednesday or Friday of next week!
