Results from Southport on 11/14

We had a great day yesterday at the Southport Speech and Debate Smackdown. The tournament was full of very tough competition from around the state, but everyone seemed to have a good time and spoke very well.

Results:
Ash Sowerby - 3rd Novice Prose
Isaac Harper - 5th Novice Discussion
Austin Lewis - 4th Varsity Declamation
Olivia Fahey - 5th Varsity Declamation

They only gave ribbons to fifth place in individual events, but we had many students in the top ten of their events. While we did not bring home any hardware, we placed 12th out of 31 teams at the tournament - something to be proud!

Onto our home meet this week!

Weekly Update Week of 11/2

Hello all,

The speech season officially kicks off this Saturday, November 7th when we travel to New Castle for our first meet. You will see the registered participants in the blog post below this one.

Things to know:

1. You need to be on the bus at 5:15am. The bus will meet us in the band lot.
2. You need to have your suit and all your accessories ready to go -- practice this week requires you to be in your suit.
3. Be sure to bring your binder if you are in a binder event.
4. Bring a water bottle.
5. Bring food for lunch or money to buy from the concession stand.

If you do not perform your piece in your suit this week at practice, you will be dropped from this meet and assessed a drop fee of $20 per event you were registered in.

See you at practice this week on Wednesday and Friday!

Notes about the next few days/weeks

Here are some information items, reminders, etc. for the coming days and weeks.

1. Any of the interpretation events (this includes declamation; you have event info sheets now, so please consult those before you ask us if you are in an interp event or not) require a 30-second or so introduction that is prepared by you and memorized.  It should let the audience know what is going on in your cutting and why its important or thematic.  Make sure that the combination of your intro and the piece are still under 10 minutes but over 5.  Ideally, an interp piece should be 8-10 mins in length.  You are to cut your books, plays, etc. to 8-10 minutes with context, good moments, and other quality literary devices in place.

2.  There will be NO PRACTICE or MEETING next week, which is your Fall Break.

3.  Most interp events that are scripted require you to cut, shrink, or somehow fit your material into a 5 X 7 binder.  Binders will be ordered for you as soon as your dues are paid, your piece is cut, and you are ready to practice with a binder.  If you are still going off of 8x11 scripts, we will not order you a binder.

4.  After fall break, we will be practicing on Wednesdays and Fridays but will be suspending Monday morning meetings until either October 12 or October 19.

5.  Dues are due by Friday, October 2.  If you ordered sweatpants and haven't paid your dues, your order will not be processed.

6.  Piece selection should be done by Friday, October 2 as well.  During Break, please cut and time your pieces and have them practice ready by the week of October 12.  This is imperative as we will start practicing in earnest and you will need to memorize sooner rather than later if your event is memorized.

Finally, a word about practices and etiquette during practices.  Anna and I truly love coaching and working with you and it is always a privilege to add new members to our team.  We love having a place available for you all to be yourselves and feel safe in doing so.  Its great that your friends enjoy hanging out and seeing what the event is all about.  However, you are ultimately responsible for your success or lack thereof.  And if you have friends that distract/detract from what you are trying to accomplish, you need to be able to tell them that you are trying to work.

You are ultimately responsible for your pieces, events, and attendance. If you are interested in being successful in speech, then you need to make the most of your practice time.  You have to be ok with little supervision during practices, because the reality is you will have little supervision during meets on Saturdays at strange high schools not named Columbus East.  And if you, for some reason, don't make it to a round, you will be disqualified and dropped from tournaments.  It makes for a long day if you don't get your four rounds or eight rounds of speaking in.

Thanks, and see you tomorrow or see you later this month!  Matt

Updates for the Week of September 21

Hello all,

We have practice this week on both Wednesday and Friday -- you only need to attend one, but you are welcome to come to both if you are free. We are going to continue working on event and piece selection. If you are writing an original piece, we will also work on outlining and writing.

Thursday, this week, there is a mandatory parents' meeting at 7pm in C104 (the small large group room). We will be going over the team expectations with you and your parents. We will be selling tickets for our upcoming fundraiser, taking orders for the team sweatpants (so we can make sure they are in for our first meet in November), and will be collecting dues.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Anna or Matt - their contact information is included on your team expectations sheet.

State Speech Parent Letter

March 23, 2015

Dear Speech Parents:

It’s been another year of growth and success for the Columbus East High School Speech Team.  We are grateful for your assistance in helping us with this growth and success.  Whether it was getting your kids to the bus VERY EARLY on Saturday mornings or helping with concessions at the IUPUC/Ivy Tech meet in December or planning on helping us before we had to cancel the Columbus East meet in February… all of it means a great deal to us as coaches.  It is also a supreme privilege working with your kids and watching them grow and succeed as speakers.

The team has taken home trophies at almost all of the meets it attended this year—a remarkable accomplishment as we have competed in 10 total meets and often had less than a full team competing.  CEHS Speech continues earning the respect of schools all over the state, especially among schools in Central Indiana and most notably among the powerhouse metro Indianapolis schools.

The culmination of this successful year will be the March 28th IHSFA State Speech Tournament at Fishers High School.  Those parents who have had team members qualified in this tournament can vouch for the fact that this is an extremely long day of competition along the same lines as the District Solo Speech tournament that was contested on March 14th at Noblesville.  The team leaves the parking lot for Fishers at 5:00am and returns to the CEHS at about 10:30pm.  While we don’t think we will be that late this year, you and your families should be prepared for a long day for your child.

There will be roughly 48 entries per event (14 X 48 = 672 entries).  There will be three preliminary rounds of competition, two semifinal rounds, and one final round.  Head coaches have to be there the entire day to judge or work the tournament.  If your child doesn’t break semis or finals, then their day ends at about 11:30 or 12 noon.  If your child breaks to semis or finals, then it would probably make sense for them to stay the whole day.

If you are available to take your child home should his or her day end early, then we will need a signed note stating that you are taking your child home for purposes of head count and liability at the end of the trip.  We would love to have the entire state-qualifying team stay for the whole day to support semifinalists and finalists, but understand if your child doesn’t want to stay the whole day.  We just want to let everyone know what is going on going into the State Tournament.

If your child is to stay for the whole day and leave with the team after the conclusion of the tournament, then it would be wise if you sent a little extra cash with them as we will be stopping for dinner on the way home (a tradition that dates back four years now).

If you have any questions, please call Matt on his cell (812) 343-7533 or Anna on her cell (860) 836-0081.  Or email us at cehs.speech@gmail.com or afcarmon@gmail.com.

Thanks again for all that you do, and for all that you have done for the team this year!

This week!

Hi friends!

We may never have a morning meeting ever again --- so with the 2 hour delay tomorrow, our morning meeting is cancelled.

We will be having practice this week on WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY, and FRIDAY. Matt will be at practice Wednesday from 320-5pm, Anna will be at practice Thursday from 320-530pm (yes this will be a longer practice to get everyone in), and Anna and Matt will both be there on Friday from 320-5pm. Please try to be at at least one practice -- if not two.

The following people are registered for Kokomo this weekend:
Alex
Mattias
Mariann
Tessa
Kira
Krysjahn
Kelsey
Andy
Zayne
Ian

Discussion this weekend will be different -- you will get your artifacts at the beginning of each round, so you will have nothing to research this week, but we can definitely talk strategy.

We will cover logistics briefly at the beginning of each practice, but practices this week will be working ones -- be prepared to give your pieces for audiences and come filed if you are in an event that requires filing.

Sunday, February 22, 2015

Weekly updates

Hi all,

Sorry for the confusion this morning. Practice is going to be important this week as we will be trying to get the registration for the remainder of the season -- East, Kokomo, Sectionals, and Districts. Once we have this registration, Anna will be able to determine if we need anymore judges based on our entries.

Also, this weekend at Ben Davis is going to be a long day - awards are not scheduled until 5:30. There will be four rounds of guaranteed competition for everyone, with a fifth final round for the top six in each event. Please be prepared with plenty of food, water, and medicine if you are not feeling well. If you need to be in Columbus for something in the evening, please make sure you have a ride arranged to pick you up. We cannot guarantee what time we will be home....but around 8pm would be generous.

We will have the sign up sheet for food and concession stand volunteers at the East meet at both practices this week.

Tuesday morning meetings are back on as scheduled starting next week and we will see you at practice tomorrow.

Weekly Reminders

Hello all,

Just wanted to remind you that there is no Tuesday morning meeting tomorrow (2/3/15). We will also only be having an optional practice this week on Wednesday (2/4/15) and there will be no practice on Friday (2/6/15). Please enjoy your weekend and relax/catch up on sleep before we start the final push of the season.

Also, next week we will begin the planning stages for our home meet on February 21 at CEHS. Even if you are not planning on competing, we will need your assistance in setting up, cleaning up, and donating food for our concession stand. I will have sign up sheets for all of this next week at practice. If your parents are interested in judging or working concessions, please let Anna or Matt know, so that we can get them added to the list.

Great job at Speedway this past weekend -- you continue to make your coaches beyond proud! There is no greater accomplishment for us then to see you excited for the accomplishments of your teammates! See you on Wednesday!

Hello all,

We wanted to remind you that there are no Tuesday morning meetings this week (1/27) or next week (2/3). The next Tuesday morning meeting will be on 2/10.

However, this makes it VERY IMPORTANT that you attend one practice a week these two weeks. We will use the beginning of each practice to make the announcements we would have in a morning meeting.

Please be thinking about whether or not you will be competing at Ben Davis on 2/14. We will be collecting the registration for this meet at practice on 2/4 and 2/6. If you know now they you will be competing, please text or email Anna your name and event information.

Use the time off to rest up, take care of yourselves, and to make sure you are caught up on your school work!

Starting up

Friends:

I hope you all had a restful and fun holiday break.  Your first day back is tomorrow, and we will NOT be having a meeting tomorrow morning.  Stay tuned about practice this week, as we don't have a meet this coming weekend.

Our first meet of 2015 will be Rushville on January 17, 2015.  We will be contacting you via the magic of text to determine if you will be competing at that meet.  Soon after, we will put a squad together for Greensburg on January 24.

We will be back on a normal schedule next week, with the 7:15 am meeting in the Orange Room and practice from 3:30-5 on Wednesday and Friday.

If you have any questions, please let us know.  Anna will be unavailable by phone today (1/5/15), so texts and calls should be directed to me.

Happy New Year!

Matt
