Need one (1) judge for Westfield, or we start cutting entries
We had sufficient judges for the Westfield tournament until late this afternoon. Now we are short one judge for the tournament. Please help us find that judge by Thursday afternoon, or we start cutting entries based on participation and team standing. And we really don't want to have to do that. Please text, tell us at practice tomorrow, or email us that name by Thursday afternoon at 5pm.
Thanks! Matt

1. If there is a 2 hour delay on Tuesday, there is no morning meeting. Check the blog for information we would have given you and directions to follow.
2. If there is a 2 hour delay on Wednesday or Friday, there will still be practice.
3. If school is cancelled, there is no morning meeting or practice.
4. If school dismisses early, practice will be cancelled.
5. We will travel to weekend meets as long as BCSC transportation tells us it is still safe. We will communicate any cancelled meets on the blog and via text message.

First meet of the season at Fishers this weekend!
Good morning all!
We are bringing a total of 14 entries and 4 judges (1 parent, 1 alum of the team and 2 IUPUC students). It is bound to be a great time! Here is some information and some reminders about our meet this weekend:
We are bringing a total of 14 entries and 4 judges (1 parent, 1 alum of the team and 2 IUPUC students). It is bound to be a great time! Here is some information and some reminders about our meet this weekend:
- Please be in the band parking lot at CEHS at 5:20am on Saturday. The bus will depart promptly at 5:30am and if you are not on the bus, you will have to find your own transportation to Fishers High School.
- If your parent(s) are judging this weekend, they are welcome to ride the bus with you or you are welcome to ride with them. If you ride with them, you need to be at Fishers High School no later than 7:30am.
- This is going to be a potentially long day.
- Matt and I would estimate we should be back to East by 5:30pm, but there are no guarantees. We will stay all the way through awards.
- If you have plans for the evening, you can have a parent pick you up at Fishers when you are done competing -- but you need to provide us with a note when you get on the bus in the morning and your parent will need to come in, so Matt or Ann can see them.
- Things to bring to the speech meet:
- Professional attire to compete in (If you are concerned about your attire, please send Matt and I a picture before Friday evening)
- Comfy clothes to change into for the bus ride back to CEHS
- A blanket and pillow for the bus
- Your speech binder if you are competing in an interp event
- Your electronic device if you are competing in extemp
- Some snacks to get you through the day and maybe some to share with your teammates
- Some cash to buy lunch from the concession stand (Remember if we want people to buy from the concession stand at our meet, we need to buy from theirs)
- Bottled water
- Any games or decks of cards to play during down time (and there may be a lot)
- An open mind and a will to do well
- This is the first meet of the year and it is going to be a blast, even if it is a really long day!
As always if you have any questions, please contact me (860.836.0081) or Matt (812.343.7533). We are really excited (and a little nervous) to get this season kicked off and to spend time with you competing!

Call out Meetings
Hello all -
It was great to see several of you at the veterans' call out last night. I wanted to share with you the schedule for next week:
Tuesday, we will meet in the Orange Room at 715am to go over team expectations and to see how many new people we can get there. Ideally, you would each bring one friend who would be interested in joining the team.....remember we are trying to get large numbers of freshmen and sophomores.
Wednesday, we will meet in the Orange Room at 320pm for the event fair. We will need volunteers to staff tables to discuss the different events we have available to our new competitors. We will also use this time for a general Q & A for everyone.

And to make the day even better, John Martoccia arranaged for a police escort from the interstate to the high school on our way home, capping off an INCREDIBLE season!
Remember, a reporter from The Republic will be meeting us in the Orange Room the Thursday after break at 3:30pm to do a story about our season. Please plan to be there and to bring your interp binders if you used one this year.

What: End of the year banquet
When: Sunday, May 4th from 3-5:30
Where: Anna's house (6055 Conestoga Trail in Columbus)
What to bring:
- Freshmen - fruit and veggie trays
- Sophomores - side dishes, chips, dips (please avoid grocery store salads -- no one ever eats them)
- Juniors - dessert
- Seniors - bring yourselves -- we will be honoring you!
Matt and I will provide brats, chicken, and veggie burgers for grilling! It will be super laidback.....we will present letters and chevrons earned this year, NFL certificates and memberships earned this year, and new levels of distinctions, and perhaps a few surprises!
Please RSVP to Anna by April 20th if you are planning on attending. My house/garage/deck is only so big, so the banquet is intending for speech competitors only!
To CEHS Speech parents of IHSFA state qualifiers
Parents:
It’s
been another year of growth and success for the Columbus East High School
Speech Team. We are grateful to you all
for helping out with the successful execution of two home speech meets over the
course of two months as well as assisting with the judging of invitational
tournaments throughout the season. We
are so grateful for your continued support of the team, and we feel privileged
to be a part of your child(ren)’s life.
Among the major highlights of this
year, we successfully qualified our first entry into the NFL National
Speech and Debate tournament to be held this year in June in Overland Park,
KS. This is a huge accomplishment for
our qualifying duo of Mariann Fant and Tessa Hirons, and marks yet another
level of sustained success for Columbus East Speech.
On the
state level, the team has taken home trophies at all but two meets this year—a
remarkable accomplishment as we have competed in 10 total meets. CEHS Speech is continuing to earn the respect of schools
all over the state, but especially among schools in Central Indiana and most
notably among the powerhouse metro Indianapolis schools.
The
culmination of this successful year will be the March 15th IHSFA
State Speech Tournament at Fishers High School.
Those parents who have had team members qualified in this tournament or
in attendance can vouch for the fact that this is an extremely long day of
competition along the same lines as the District Solo Speech tournament that
was contested on March 8th at Logansport. The team leaves the parking lot for Fishers
at 5:30am and returns to the CEHS at about 11:00pm. We ask that you send cash with your
child as we plan on stopping for some kind of quick dinner somewhere in the
area before we make the drive home.
There
will be roughly 48 entries per event (14 X 48 = 672 entries). There will be three preliminary rounds of
competition, two semifinal rounds, and one final round. Head coaches have to be there the entire day
to judge or work the tournament. If your
child doesn’t break semis or finals, then their day ends at about 11:30 or 12
noon. If your child breaks to semis or
finals, then it would probably make sense for them to stay the whole day.
If you
are available to take your child home should his or her day end early, then we
will need a signed note stating that you are taking your child home for
purposes of head count and liability at the end of the trip. Either Anna or
Matt will also need to see you and your child before you leave, just so we know
that your child has left with you. We
would love to have the entire state-qualifying team stay for the whole day to
support semifinalists and finalists, but understand if your child doesn’t want
to stay the whole day. We just want to
let everyone know what impacts the State Tournament might have on families.
If you
have any questions, please call Matt on his cell (812) 343-7533 or Anna on her
cell (860) 831-0081. Or email us at cehs.speech@gmail.com
or afcarmon@gmail.com.
Thanks! Matt and Anna

Judging for IHSFA State
All:
We have secured four of the six judges for the IHSFA State Speech Meet. We still need two more. Anna and I plus two IUPUC students have agreed to judge for us for state. Please help us find judges for March 15. It will be a longer day than normal for competition, so the people you seek out should be aware of that up front.
We appreciate any assistance that you all can provide us.

You win - congratulations, you are both going to state! However, you will speak once to determine your placing in a final round. Your topic will be Europe (Germany, Bosnia, France, Greece, England). Results from IUPUC/Ivy Tech Meet
Wow, what a day it was! Starting with horrendous roads and bad weather, but ending the best way possible! Matt and I could not be prouder of the representatives of CEHS you were yesterday and how much help you were in running the tournament. The tournament would not have run half as smoothly if we did not have your help. Also, we cannot thank all the parents enough for their help with the concession stand and setting up and cleaning up - we made almost a $400 profit on the day!
Many coaches remarked yesterday about how CEHS should take a trophy at the end of the day, but we continued to remind them that it was the little schools at one point that gave us the chance to bring home a trophy when they opted not to.....so is it bittersweet not to have a trophy from our first ever TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP, sure, maybe......but we know and you know how incredibly you performed!
Rather than posting all the results from yesterday, here is the link https://www.speechwire.com/r-team.php?teamid=1769&seasonid=6 -- it is pretty incredible, but I will leave you will the list of the EIGHT blue ribbons we won!

Another snow day for the books...
Hello all:
Here are the announcements that would have been made this morning:
1. We are in need of a couple parents to help with concessions. If your parent or support person can help, please let Anna know as soon as possible and send their contact information along. I will have Mrs. Hahn contact them ASAP.
2. The food list was posted last night. If at all possible, please bring or send your food on Friday, so that we can get everything all set up and not have to worry about it the day of the meet.
3. We will have practice tomorrow from 3:20-5. If you are intending to compete this weekend, you need to be there - unless you have contacted Matt or Anna with a reasonable excuse before practice starts.
4. Please come to IUPUC right after school on Friday.....we will try to be as quick and efficient in our set up.
5. You will need to be at IUPUC between 630 and 645 Saturday morning to help with any last minute setup and directing the other teams. We will be meeting in the main entrance of the Learning Center.
If you have any questions, please let Matt or Anna know as soon as possible.

JANUARY 25TH MEET
Just a reminder that we do have a meet next weekend, even though it is not on the calendar. The December 7th IUPUC/Ivy Tech meet has been rescheduled for next weekend. You all should plan on competing, unless there is a conflict you have discussed with Matt and I. We will be offering improv duo and you are welcome to triple in it. You will need to report to the Columbus Learning Center Saturday morning at 7am.
We will only have one formal practice next week on Wednesday at East. Friday we will all meet outside Anna's office after school in order to post signs and get the meet set up and organized.
There will be a team dinner and bonding time at the Hahn Family Residence immediately following the meet on Saturday. More information about that will follow.
See Matt or Anna if you have any questions!

Floyd Central Speech Meet on 1/18
We head to Floyd Central next Saturday......
A couple things:
1. We need judges. They are requiring each team bring one judge for every four entries....so this is a couple more judges than we might normally we need. We have one judge signed on and ready to go.
2. Radio --- you only need to bring a 3 minute prepared newscast - they will provide everything else you need.
3. Discussion will follow the seminar format and they will provide all the materials the day of the tournament.
We are having an important meeting on Tuesday morning -- so hope to see everyone there!
Results from Ben Davis Speech Meet
Wow, today was certainly something -- ups and downs, delays....but we survived and made it home in one piece!
There were 19 schools at the meet with 442 entries -- probably the largest meet we have attended this year. The competition was very tough, but we are hoping everyone learned a lot.
Our ribboners from today are:
Gracie - 4th IX
Naveen - 6th IX
Patrick - 4th Impromptu
Mariann - 6th HI
Mariann and Tessa - 5th Memorized Duo
We placed 7th out of 19 teams! Something certainly to be proud of!
Today was a day to get back in the saddle after a month off -- next week it is on to Floyd Central! By the way, we are in serious need of judges! :)

Practice Schedule during the lost week...
All:
Your coaches hope to see you again at some point this year.
The current thinking is that we will hold practices on Thursday and Friday from 3:20-5:00 or so. We will give priority to new pieces and to those competing at Ben Davis on 1/11. Those that are not going to Ben Davis but are veteran competitors are welcome to roll up their sleeves and peer coach on either day.
Again, leave time for Ben Davis is 6am, so be at the north/band/faculty lot at 5:50am on Saturday.
Stay warm and try to not kill your family members because you have spent so much time with them over the past three weeks.
If you have any questions, please text Anna or Matt.
See you soon!

This week...
Hello all,
We are obviously not going to have a Tuesday morning meeting this week because of your snow day. Therefore, it is going to be really important that if you are going to Ben Davis this weekend that we see you at practice this week. It has been a really long time since we practiced last, so the more practice we get in this week the better off you will be. If you are not going to Ben Davis but would like to come to practice this week and help peer coach, Matt and I would be much appreciative.
We are working on getting the Christmas party/team dinner rescheduled. As soon as we have more information on that, we will let you know.
The bus will leave for Ben Davis at 6am on Saturday - please be in the band lot by 5:50am. I am not sure what time we will be back, as it is likely to be a good size meet. They are running three rounds and finals. We will stay for awards. If you arrange a ride back for winter formal, please make sure your parents send us a note Saturday morning and that we see them when they come to pick you up at the meet.
Looking forward to getting back in the swing of things!
