Please check that each student is entered in the proper events and that each student only appears once. If they appear on two separate lines, one of them is a misspelling and should be corrected in your entries. Impromptu update for Saturday, 11/19

Impromptu contestants: You will be going to impromptu FIRST all day tomorrow. Also, you will have SEVEN TOTAL MINUTES for your round of impromptu. This means that in seven minutes you are to both prep and speak, so that your total prep/speak is not to exceed seven minutes. This may not make much sense now, but we can perhaps explain it better in person tomorrow.

Reminder: 5:15 band lot tomorrow morning; 5:30 leave time. Home around 6pm, but no guarantees.

Check your texts for the link to SignupGenius for the IU East meet... we have limited spots left, so some of you may not get your preferred events or may have to settle for single entry. Everything was first-come, first-serve.

Notes for Fishers meet and rest of the week

Hello all,

The speech season officially kicks off this Saturday, November 5th when we travel to Fishers HS for our first meet. You will see the registered participants in the blog post above this one.

Things to know:

1. You need to be on the bus at 5:45am. The bus will meet us in the band lot (north end of the high school, corner of Indiana and S. Marr). The bus will leave at 6am with or without you.
2. You need to have your suit and all your accessories ready to go -- practice this week requires you to be in your suit.
3. Be sure to bring your binder if you are in a scripted event or an event that requires some outside sources.
4. Bring a water bottle.
5. Bring food for lunch or money to buy from the concession stand. If you bring food to put on the table, then that food is fair game for everyone on the team. If you don't want to bring food for anyone but you, please keep it with you or off of the table.
6. We don't know when the bus will return to Columbus, but it will definitely be after 5pm. If you need to be back in Columbus earlier than 6pm, then I would suggest you arrange for a parent to pick you up at Fishers. If that is the case, you must hand either Anna or me a note when you board the bus Saturday morning.
7. Please report whether or not you can attend the Southport meet on November 12 by the end of practice tomorrow unless you have already arranged something with Anna or me.

If you have any questions in general, please let us know. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday if not before.

State Tournament information for Parents of Qualifiers

March 7, 2016
Dear Speech Parents:
It’s been another year of growth and success for the Columbus East High School Speech Team.  We are grateful for your assistance in helping us with this growth and success.  Whether it was getting your kids to the bus VERY EARLY on Saturday mornings or helping with concessions at either the IUPUC/Ivy Tech meet in February or the Columbus East meet in November, the level of support you have provided has been nothing short of remarkable. Anna and Matt are grateful to you all for your support of the team, the activity, and us as coaches.
One of the big highlights this year took place this past Saturday at Ben Davis High School (not insignificantly, Anna and Matt have spent almost 48 working, waking hours there helping run meets… they only brought the team to one of those meets). The Columbus East team won the leading chapter award for the Hoosier Heartland NSDA district. This award is given each year to a chapter who has accumulated the most degrees in a five-year cycle or from the time they last won the award. It also rewards the longevity of the charter and the endurance of its team and coaches for continuing to pursue excellence in speech. The CEHS charter dates back to 1975, so without knowing it, the team celebrated 40 years of accomplishment last year. When Anna and Matt started recognizing the team through entering points with the NSDA, they also were bringing the team up to charter status with NSDA. Thanks again for your support in getting students on the bus… that’s where this whole thing begins.
The IHSFA State Speech Tournament is this Saturday, March 12, 2015, at Fishers High School (intersection of 131st St. and Promise Rd. in Fishers). Anna will be taking the kids in the minibus to the tournament as we’re so small numbers-wise. Leave time is 5:45 am. Note the later leave time! Matt was elected to the IHSFA Executive Board as an at-large representative last year. This requires him to be at a Friday meeting and help register teams on Friday afternoon. Matt will meet Anna, the team, and the judges at Fishers High School on Saturday.
This is an incredibly long day of competition which requires Anna and Matt to stay the whole day no matter what. There will be three preliminary rounds of competition, a quarterfinal, a semifinal, and one final round.  Head coaches have to be there the entire day to judge or work the tournament.  If your child doesn’t break semis or finals, then their day ends at about 11:30 or 12 noon.  If your child breaks to semis or finals, they will stay the whole day.
If you are available to take your child home should his or her day end early, then we will need a signed note stating that you are taking your child home for purposes of head count and liability at the end of the trip.  We would love to have the entire state-qualifying team stay for the whole day to support semifinalists and finalists, but understand if your child doesn’t want to stay the whole day.  We just want to let everyone know what is going on going into the State Tournament.
If your child is to stay for the whole day and leave with the team after the conclusion of the tournament, then it would be wise if you sent a little extra cash with them as we will be stopping for dinner on the way home (a tradition that dates back five years now).
If you have any questions, please call Matt on his cell (812) 343-7533 or Anna on her cell (860) 836-0081.  Or email us at cehs.speech@gmail.com or afcarmon@gmail.com.
Thanks again for all that you do, and for all that you have done for the team this year!

Information for this week

Hello all,

Because school was cancelled today, we cannot hold practice. Anna will be coming to CEHS tomorrow to hold a practice from 320-500pm. If you are competing this weekend, you should plan to come to this practice to at least check in, even if you cannot stay.

You can find the discussion artifacts for this weekend's meet at: https://www.speechwire.com/c-files.php

The radio format for this weekend is as follows:

Round 1 -- a contestant-created 5 minute news program (music Lead in/ Lead out/ Commercial on a cellphone (iPhone, Samsung, etc)-- NEWSCAST prepared by student

Round 2 -- a 2-minute  contestant-written editorial on what the United States should do in response to the refugee crisis in Europe.

    Round 3 -- On-The-Spot -- 2-minute prep / 2 minute speak

    Round 4 -- Same as round 1

The tournament will be run in four straight rounds with no finals. They will be awarding trophies to the top 10 teams and ribbons to the top ten in each event.

You will need to be in the parking lot at 6:15 on Saturday and the bus will leave for Greensburg at 6:30. Awards are scheduled to begin at 2pm.

If you have any questions, please contact Anna as Matt will be out of town from Friday midday on.
