IHSFA State Tournament Results

Yesterday was an incredible day at Fishers High School for the state tournament. CEHS had a fantastc showing....we had three semifinalists: Mariann in HI, Gracie in IX, and Nicole in USX. Whitney was the STATE CHAMPION in Discussion. The team has a whole placed 4th in Class AA -- something we have also never done before. And to make the day even better, John Martoccia arranaged for a police escort from the interstate to the high school on our way home, capping off an INCREDIBLE season!

Remember, a reporter from The Republic will be meeting us in the Orange Room the Thursday after break at 3:30pm to do a story about our season. Please plan to be there and to bring your interp binders if you used one this year.

End of the Year Banquet

We have so much to much to celebrate this year......our most successful one yet, our first national qualifiers, our state qualifiers, our seven seniors, and so much more! So when will we celebrate?

What: End of the year banquet
When: Sunday, May 4th from 3-5:30
Where: Anna's house (6055 Conestoga Trail in Columbus)
What to bring:

  • Freshmen - fruit and veggie trays
  • Sophomores - side dishes, chips, dips (please avoid grocery store salads -- no one ever eats them)
  • Juniors - dessert
  • Seniors - bring yourselves -- we will be honoring you!
Matt and I will provide brats, chicken, and veggie burgers for grilling! It will be super laidback.....we will present letters and chevrons earned this year, NFL certificates and memberships earned this year, and new levels of distinctions, and perhaps a few surprises!

Please RSVP to Anna by April 20th if you are planning on attending. My house/garage/deck is only so big, so the banquet is intending for speech competitors only!

To CEHS Speech parents of IHSFA state qualifiers

Parents:

It’s been another year of growth and success for the Columbus East High School Speech Team.  We are grateful to you all for helping out with the successful execution of two home speech meets over the course of two months as well as assisting with the judging of invitational tournaments throughout the season.  We are so grateful for your continued support of the team, and we feel privileged to be a part of your child(ren)’s life.
Among the major highlights of this year, we successfully qualified our first entry into the NFL National Speech and Debate tournament to be held this year in June in Overland Park, KS.  This is a huge accomplishment for our qualifying duo of Mariann Fant and Tessa Hirons, and marks yet another level of sustained success for Columbus East Speech.
On the state level, the team has taken home trophies at all but two meets this year—a remarkable accomplishment as we have competed in 10 total meets.  CEHS Speech is continuing to earn the respect of schools all over the state, but especially among schools in Central Indiana and most notably among the powerhouse metro Indianapolis schools.
The culmination of this successful year will be the March 15th IHSFA State Speech Tournament at Fishers High School.  Those parents who have had team members qualified in this tournament or in attendance can vouch for the fact that this is an extremely long day of competition along the same lines as the District Solo Speech tournament that was contested on March 8th at Logansport.  The team leaves the parking lot for Fishers at 5:30am and returns to the CEHS at about 11:00pm.  We ask that you send cash with your child as we plan on stopping for some kind of quick dinner somewhere in the area before we make the drive home.
There will be roughly 48 entries per event (14 X 48 = 672 entries).  There will be three preliminary rounds of competition, two semifinal rounds, and one final round.  Head coaches have to be there the entire day to judge or work the tournament.  If your child doesn’t break semis or finals, then their day ends at about 11:30 or 12 noon.  If your child breaks to semis or finals, then it would probably make sense for them to stay the whole day.
If you are available to take your child home should his or her day end early, then we will need a signed note stating that you are taking your child home for purposes of head count and liability at the end of the trip. Either Anna or Matt will also need to see you and your child before you leave, just so we know that your child has left with you.  We would love to have the entire state-qualifying team stay for the whole day to support semifinalists and finalists, but understand if your child doesn’t want to stay the whole day.  We just want to let everyone know what impacts the State Tournament might have on families.

If you have any questions, please call Matt on his cell (812) 343-7533 or Anna on her cell (860) 831-0081.  Or email us at cehs.speech@gmail.com or afcarmon@gmail.com.

Thanks!  Matt and Anna

Judging for IHSFA State

All:

We have secured four of the six judges for the IHSFA State Speech Meet.  We still need two more.  Anna and I plus two IUPUC students have agreed to judge for us for state.  Please help us find judges for March 15.  It will be a longer day than normal for competition, so the people you seek out should be aware of that up front.

We appreciate any assistance that you all can provide us.

~Matt
